ANDREW SCHOULTZ

Né à Milwaukee dans le Wisconsin (USA) en 1975, Andrew Schoultz a grandi dans une famille typique de la classe moyenne américaine, au gré des changements politiques du pays. Son déménagement à San Francisco dans les années 90 lui permet de se libérer des limites conservatrices de sa ville natale, et de se plonger dans le milieu du graffiti et du skateboard de la Bay Area. Rapidement il s’impose comme skateur professionnel tout en se forgeant une solide réputation de graffeur. Après 17 ans dans cette ville animée, Schoultz s’installe à Los Angeles en 2014. Ses peintures murales sont toujours omniprésentes dans les rues de San Francisco.

Andrew Schoultz est plus connu aujourd’hui comme un artiste de renommée internationale, travaillant avec des galeries d’art, des musées ainsi que des institutions du monde entier. Au cours des 20 dernières années, ses œuvres sont apparues dans le marché de l’art contemporain sans jamais perdre de vue son objectif, inchangé : faire de l’art un commentaire politique. Son travail ne présente pas des références à des événements historiques singuliers, mais explore plutôt une agitation collective, qui provient d’affaires et d’histoires globales et disparates telles que les guerres en Irak et en Afghanistan, l’élection américaine de 2016, la montée de la Chine en tant que géant économique, les catastrophes naturelles, les affres de la récession aux États-Unis ou même la chute des empires perse et romain.
Ses peintures mettent en scène une histoire éphémère vouée à se répéter, pour laquelle il puise son inspiration aussi bien dans la cartographie allemande du XVe siècle que dans la miniature indienne ou encore, plus récemment, le Modernisme catalan. Dans ses techniques mixtes sur papier ou sur toile, les notions de guerre, de spiritualité et d’impérialisme socio-politique sont des thèmes récurrents, mis en parallèle à une toute aussi répétitive poursuite contemporaine de l’accumulation et du pouvoir.

Andrew Schoultz est diplômé en Illustration de la Academy of Arts University de San Francisco (2003). Il vit et travaille à Los Angeles. Des expositions personnelles lui ont été consacrées dans un grand nombre de villes de part et d’autre des Etats-Unis, ainsi qu’à Copenhague, Rotterdam, Londres, Milan, Paris… Il se consacre depuis ces dernières années aux expositions institutionnelles et de ce fait, a participé à des expositions au Andy Warhol Museum (PA, USA), Torrance Art Museum (CA, USA), Biennale de la Havane (Cuba), Hyde Park Arts Center (IL, USA), Laguna Art Museum (CA, USA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, LACMA-Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Frederick R. Weisman Foundation (CA, USA), The Progressive Art Collection (OH, USA). Le Fort Wayne Museum of Art (Fort Wayne, Indiana) et le Barrack Museum of Art (Las Vegas, Nevada) lui ont consacré deux importantes expositions personnelles en 2018.
Schoultz est également connu pour ses grandes fresques murales, qu’il a notamment réalisées à Portland, Jogjakarta (Indonésie), San Francisco, Miami, Manille (Philippines), Hawaii, …
