Mu Pan est né à Taïwan en 1976 dans une famille originaire de Chine continentale. Il quitte l’île et son histoire complexe, pour New York où il émigre avec ses parents en 1997 lorsqu’il a 21 ans. Repartant de zéro avec sa famille, il adhère à la culture américaine non sans quelques appréhensions, et étudie à la School of Visual Arts de New York où il obtient en 2007 un M.F.A avec félicitations. Devenu citoyen américain, Mu Pan cultive et revendique ses multiples identités culturelles dans ses peintures. Il peint à l’acrylique sur bois et sur papier. Ses œuvres d’une grande précision proposent une narration, souvent des scènes de bataille qui lui permettent de multiplier les péripéties.

Mu Pan, c’est la rencontre entre Jérôme Bosch, Kuniyoshi et Marvel Comics, avec ses grandes peintures épiques et narratives, imprégnées de références culturelles et historiques au Japon et à la Chine, et de pop culture américaine. Les narrations qu’il élabore mettent en scène des événements de l’Histoire chinoise et japonaise classique et contemporaine, réinterprétés selon son langage pictural, engagé et politique. Ses nouveaux mythes sont marqués par des personnages hybrides et des éléments de culture populaire à la limite du cartoon. Ses peintures narratives sont aussi le prétexte d’acerbes critiques sociales de ses pays d’accueil et d’origine, sur l’immigration, la gentrification des quartiers populaires de New York ou la nouvelle génération de jeunes de Taiwan. Son travail plus récent lui permet d’élaborer une nouvelle forme de narration, et la création d’un panthéon de dieux animaux. Partout dans ses peintures, quelqu’un se fait manger par un autre.
L’ambiance de chaos et de fourmillement qui se dégage de la plupart de ses œuvres ne sont pas sans évoquer les miniatures hollandaises ou indiennes, pour ses atmosphères de fin du monde, pour ses personnages hybrides mi-homme mi-animal, pour le foisonnement de détails et le caractère mystique et mythique qui s’en dégage. Cette violence apparente est en lien avec sa personnalité : Mu Pan dit de lui-même qu’il est une personne en colère, ainsi son travail artistique est pour lui une voie vers l’équité: «Dessiner et peindre sont, pour moi, les voies les plus évidentes à emprunter pour trouver la justice».

La première monographie sur le travail de Mu Pan a été publiée en 2020 chez Abrams (American Fried Rice: The Art of Mu Pan).

Mu Pan was born in Taiwan in 1976 to a family originally from mainland China. He left the island and its complex history for New York where he emigrated with his parents in 1997 when he was 21. Starting from scratch with his family, he embraced American culture with some trepidation, and studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York where he graduated in 2007 with an M.F.A. with honors. Now an American citizen, Mu Pan cultivates and asserts his multiple cultural identities in his paintings. He paints with acrylic on wood and paper. His works of great precision offer a narrative, often battle scenes that allow him to multiply the adventures.

Mu Pan personalizes the encounter of Hieronymus Bosch, Kuniyoshi and Marvel Comics, with his large epic and narrative paintings, impregnated with cultural and historical references to Japan and China, and American pop culture. The narratives he develops feature events from classical and contemporary Chinese and Japanese history, reinterpreted in his committed and political pictorial language. His new myths are marked by hybrid characters and elements of popular culture bordering on the cartoonish. His narrative paintings are also the pretext for acerbic social criticism of his host and native countries, on immigration, the gentrification of New York’s working class neighborhoods or the new generation of young people in Taiwan. His more recent work allows him to develop a new form of narrative, and the creation of a pantheon of animal gods. Everywhere in his paintings, someone is being eaten by someone else.

The atmosphere of chaos and swarming that emanates from most of his works are reminiscent of Dutch or Indian miniatures, for its end-of-the-world atmospheres, for its hybrid half-man half-animal characters, for the abundance of details and the mystical and mythical character that emerges. This apparent violence is related to his personality: Mu Pan says of himself that he is an angry person, so his artistic work is for him a way to equity: “Drawing and painting are, for me, the most obvious ways to find justice”.

Abrams published the first monograph book dedicated to the work and practice of Mu Pan in 2020 (American Fried Rice: The Art of Mu Pan).
